The Ugly Truth Pan is a large, round frying pan made of carbon steel that's purported to be unattractive, but highly effective when you want to cook a wide variety of foods quickly and evenly. Each one has been designed for use on your stovetop and in the oven, and it's stated that the more stains each one picks up inside, the more its natural non-stick qualities will improve. This pan also has a stay-cool, double-riveted handle with a hole that'll help you hang it up.

How It Works

Many round and square frying pans have a non-stick nature, due to an inner coating that's been added to the inside of each. However, that coating can flake off over time, and diminish the performance of these pans, especially if you use metal utensils within them. On the other hand, the Ugly Truth Pan is made of naturally non-stick materials, so there's no coating that'll wear away. In fact, as this type of pan picks up stains over time (as carbon steel pans typically do), the non-stick nature of its inner surface will be enhanced. Therefore, this type of pan's performance will actually improve over time. Aside from its inability to cling to food, the Ugly Truth Pan's carbon steel will evenly conduct heat at a rate two times as fast as that of a ceramic-coated frying pan.

Features

  • Lightweight Yet Durable

A lot of frying pans are made of cast iron, which will tend to feel heavy as you carry it around, but this one's carbon steel material is more lightweight than cast iron is. It's also more durable than cast iron, though, so you can expect one of these pans to last for many years, even if you bang it around or drop it frequently.

  • Double-Riveted Handle

Each Ugly Truth Pan has a handle with double rivets that'll help it stay attached securely to the pan throughout its lifetime. This handle will stay cool to the touch, regardless of how hot the rest of the pan is, so it'll never burn the fingers of anyone who picks it up. Like the pan itself, it's lightweight, and each one also has a hole in the end that'll allow you to hang the pan from a hook in your kitchen.

  • Generous Size

Although this round frying pan isn't very deep, it has a fairly large diameter. You'll likely be able to fit four hamburger patties or a pizza that's large enough to feed a small family into it without having ingredients spill over the sides.

  • Oven Safe

You may find many uses for this type of pan on your stovetop, but it's also safe for you to use in your oven, as it can tolerate temperatures up to 1000 degrees Fahrenheit. Therefore, besides using it to cook breakfast, lunch, or dinner for yourself and your household, you can use it to bake a variety of round desserts.

Positive Points

  • Cooks Virtually Anything

With pans that can get sticky and cling onto bits of food, you may have to limit the types of food you cook within them, but that won't be so with the Ugly Truth Pan. It's a suitable choice when you need to cook almost anything on your stovetop or in your oven, including eggs, vegetables, meat, and bread products such as waffles. You'll also be able to add virtually any type of cheese or sauce to your meals without being concerned that this type of substance won't come off the pan.

  • No Lubricants Required

On a related note, since this pan fits into the non-stick category, you won't have to add any lubricants such as butter or oil to it in order to allow food to slide out. Consuming butter or oil—even just a bit added to the bottom of a pan—can add calories and fat to any meal, so if you're watching your waistline, eliminating these lubricants may assist you. Plus, you won't have to make sure you have enough butter or oil in your kitchen before you cook!

  • Can be Wiped Clean

If you haven't used your pan to cook meat or dairy products, and you're going to be using it again in the near future, you'll be able to simply wipe it clean. Once you take a cloth to it, any food residue should slide out of its inner surface and onto that cloth in seconds. Otherwise, because of its materials, the pan should be hand-washed with soap and water, as opposed to being loaded into a dishwasher.

Negative Points

  • No Square Option

Some people prefer to cook food in square pans instead of round ones since square ones provide a bit more space at the corners than round ones of a similar size. If that description applies to you, especially if you like to cook a lot of square dishes (such as lasagna) you may be disappointed that there's no square version of the round Ugly Truth Pan. Some users may also be disappointed that this pan is no more than a couple of inches deep, at most.

  • Recipe Book Isn't Included

One accessory that comes with many other pieces of kitchenware is a recipe book that will provide you with dozens of recipes you can make with your new piece. Unfortunately, there's no recipe book accompanying the Ugly Truth Pan, so if you're an amateur cook and you don't know where to start, you'll need to look through books or online for appropriate recipes.

  • Not Dishwasher Safe

As alluded to above, since this pan is made from carbon steel, it's not safe to load it into your dishwasher, as this will likely cause the past to rust quickly. If you were thinking of doing this to save time after your meals, and your pan is too dirty to be given a quick wipe clean, you'll have no choice but to hand-wash it instead.

Critical Advice

Wearing an oven mitt isn't necessary when you're working with this pan on your stovetop, but you should always put an oven mitt on before you go to remove it from the oven. While its handle will stay cool to the touch, by design, your hand could accidentally slip and touch the body of the pan as you're reaching out, and you could end up getting burned. Unlike the handle, the body of the pan is able to get incredibly hot, especially if you're cooking at temperatures at or just below 1000 degrees Fahrenheit.

Warnings

  • Never Put in Microwave

This long-handled pan likely won't fit into your microwave, but it hasn't been designed for microwave use anyway, so you should never try to use it inside a microwave oven of any size. If you were to maneuver it into a microwave and start the timer, this could damage the pan and the microwave, or in a worst-case scenario, start a fire.
