Total Up is a device that's meant to be used by almost anyone who may have difficulty rising out of a chair or a sofa. It's purported to have a comfortable vinyl seat filled with foam padding, adjustable arms, and a weight limit of 300 pounds. This black-and-blue device that resembles a seat itself has been designed to give seniors and other people with mobility issues as much independence as possible. Each device weighs about 19 pounds, so users may even be able to move it around themselves.

How to Use (Step by Step)

  1. Fully Assemble Device

Each device will show up 90 percent assembled, but you'll need to raise the lower arms and add the upper arms yourself. You'll be provided with an instruction manual that will tell you exactly how to do this.

  2. Add to Seat of Choice

Once you've attached the upper arms to your device, and the lower arms are in the appropriate position, it'll be time to add the device to the seat of your choice. If you use it on a chair or sofa with a cushion, use the attached (and adjustable) black straps to strap it securely around the cushion. Alternatively, make sure the straps are out of the way if you plan on using the device on a seat without a removable cushion.

  3. Sit Down

Next, with your Total Up device resting securely in place on top of a standard seat of some kind, sit down on the device's blue vinyl-covered cushion. As you sit, you'll be able to hang onto the device's armrests, if you'd like. You can also slide the armrests forward or back a bit, depending on the length of your arms.

  4. Rise up

When you think you're done sitting, you'll then have to push down gently on the upper arms of your device and lean forward. This will cause the device to act like a lever that'll automatically lift you into a standing position. Following that, you can walk away on your own, or if you have a cane nearby, grab onto that with one hand.

  • Works With Most Seats

The Total Up seat assist device is 17 inches long, 22 inches wide, and 4.5 inches tall. Taking these dimensions into account, that means it's suitable for use on almost any seat, such as a chair, sofa, or bench. The only seats that may not be compatible with it are seats with dimensions smaller than those listed for the device, as this might cause the device to slide off of them.

  • Portable

This is a portable device, as it's smaller than most chairs and only weighs 19 pounds. Many users will be able to move it around their home, or from their home to their car and back, by themselves. If you're unable to do that, you should be able to move it around with the help of one other person.

  • Padded Cushion

Due to the fact that the blue cushioned seat found within each Total Up device is filled with a lot of padding, you should be able to sit on it for hours without becoming uncomfortable. In fact, if you place it on top of a hard wooden or metal chair, or a chair or sofa with a flimsy cushion, you may find the seat far more comfortable than usual.

  • Washable

Your whole device can be hand-washed with soap and water if you feel like it's gotten too dirty. If you wet a washcloth and add soap, you'll be able to wipe the whole thing down, thereby getting rid of any dust, lint, or bits of food that have accumulated on the surface.

  • No Electricity Required

Total Up is powered completely by the principles of physics and the power of the person using it at the time, so you won't need any electricity or even batteries to use it properly. That means you'll be able to use it almost anywhere you want to, instead of being limited to areas in which there's an available electrical outlet.

Positive Points

  • Aids With Independence

If you have mobility issues and you're always looking for help when you need to get out of a chair, you may feel like your independence is being threatened. Fortunately, if you get a Total Up device, you probably won't need to ask for help anymore, and you'll likely be able to live alone for longer than you'd otherwise be able to. You'll also be able to attend events that require you to sit down and get up on your own if you're able to bring this device along.

  • For Indoor and Outdoor Use

Although the Total Up seat assist device has been designed with indoor use in mind, it can also be just as effective outdoors, as long as it's not too large for your chosen seat. However, if it's incredibly rainy or the weather outside is otherwise terrible, it's best to avoid using it outdoors on that particular day. While it's safe to wash the cushion of your device with a bit of water, subjecting it to a torrential downpour or snow could damage it.

  • Consult With Your Doctor

Most adult men and women can use the Total Up device safely, but if you have heart problems, are pregnant, or are suffering from high blood pressure, you shouldn't use it. The same goes for people with other medical conditions that doctors commonly refer to as serious. With that being said, you should consult with your primary care physician before beginning to use the device, even if you believe you're perfectly healthy, as there may be risks you're not aware of.

  • Supervise Kids and Teens

Kids and teenagers should never be using a device like this alone, since they may not totally understand its mechanics and consequently end up getting hurt. It's acceptable to allow a child or teen to use this device to stand up, especially a child or teen with mobility issues, but an adult should be supervising them as they do so.

Save Money

Without a device like the Total Up around, you might have to hire a personal support worker for yourself or a loved one who can't get up out of a seat themselves. After you obtain one of these devices, though, you may not require a professional to come into your home or the home of your loved one any longer. Instead, the individual with mobility issues may be able to stay alone at home all day and use this device to get up whenever they need to.

Critical Advice

If you typically require a cane to walk, make sure that it's sitting nearby as you ease yourself down onto your Total Up cushion. That way, you'll be able to reach for it comfortably, without lunging, whenever you use the device to rise to a standing position.
