Tac Pen

Tac Pen is a black pen that's not much bigger than a standard pen, but it's been designed to be military-tough. It's specified that besides being able to function as an ordinary pen, it contains a flashlight with a beam that'll reach up to two nautical miles, plus a couple of other built-in tools. This device is purported to be functional at a wide variety of temperatures, from bitterly cold ones to extremely hot ones, so you'll likely be able to use it on any given day.

Total Cost Breakdown

The cost of Tac Pen is $19.99 and the shipping is FREE!

This price was obtained from the As Seen on TV commercial page which was taken offline due to Tac Pen being discontinued. Tac Pen may still be found for sale on Amazon or Ebay.

How to Use (Step by Step)

  1. Choose Function to Use

Once you've obtained your Tac Pen, you'll be able to use it as a pen, a flashlight, a multi-functional tool (that will tighten screws and open alcohol bottles), and an emergency tool for smashing glass. To use the flashlight, you'll simply need to turn the device on with the power button. In order to access the pen, you'll need to pull the flashlight piece, which doubles as a cap, off the top. The emergency tool is located at the opposite end, and if you remove that, you'll be able to access the multi-function tool.

  2. Make Adjustments and Use Tool

If you'll be using any tool besides the flashlight, you can use it as-is. However, if you're going to be using the flashlight, there are some settings you can adjust. If you twist the top of the flashlight to the left and right, you'll be able to zoom your beam in and out to either focus narrowly on something or take a wider view. You can also consult your instruction manual to find out exactly how to turn the strobe light on. It may come in handy if you're approached by someone threatening and would like to disorient them.

  3. Turn Off Device

When you're done using your Tac Pen, if you've turned on the power button, remember to turn it off again in order to conserve the device's battery. If you haven't used the flashlight, you probably won't have turned the power button on, so you won't have to worry about this. Be sure to store your pen in a safe place until its next use, too. It's best to store it at room temperature, even though it can tolerate a wide variety of temperatures.

Features

  • Black

Every Tac Pen is black, so regardless of whether you want to look tough, businesslike, sophisticated or all three, you'll likely achieve your aim by carrying one of these pens. If you use yours in a business setting, people may not even realize that it's more than an ordinary pen. Moreover, if you ever want to sneak up on someone threatening and then turn on your pen's strobe light, you'll be able to conceal it quite effectively as you do so.

  • Slim

Although this type of pen isn't quite as slim as a standard pen, it's much slimmer than most hand-held flashlights are. You may not be able to carry an ordinary flashlight in your pocket, but this pen will fit in most pockets, and each one contains a clip that will help you attach it securely. Each pen is also slim enough that the majority of people won't have difficulty writing with it when they need to.

  • Durable

This pen is made of durable materials that the manufacturers (Bell and Howell) have come to be known for. It's stated that each pen may survive being run over by a wheel without incurring damage, so if you happen to drop yours on the ground, that likely won't affect its functionality. The same goes if someone happens to step on one of these pens by accident. Due to their high level of durability, you can expect that one of these pens might last you for several years or more.

  • Battery Operated

Each Tac Pen is battery operated, which means you won't require electricity in order to use one. That'll come as a relief to people who want to use it outdoors in nature, especially for extended periods of time, since electricity can be hard to come by in forests or other remote areas. Furthermore, no matter where you use it, you'll never have to be concerned about dragging around an extension cord along with your pen.

Positive Points

  • Promotes Safety

Regardless of whether you're traveling by land or by water, being able to see what's in front of you, including potential obstacles, will make your journey much safer. Fortunately, if you use the standard setting of your Tac Pen's flashlight, its beam will enable you to see up to two nautical miles ahead. That's nearly the same distance as two standard miles, so if you watch what you see carefully with the beam, you'll dramatically increase your chances of avoiding danger.

  • Useful in Emergencies

If you do find yourself in an emergency situation, your Tac Pen's escape tool or its multi-function tool may be able to help you save yourself. In the event that something important breaks while you're on the road or on the water, and you need a screw, you can use the multi-function tool as a screwdriver. On the other hand, if you need to smash some glass in order to get yourself out of a dangerous area, such as a sinking vehicle, the emergency escape tool will aid you with that.

  • Doubles as Bottle Opener

Even if you're just going to have some leisurely drinks with friends, this device may be a good one to bring along with you. Since its multi-function tool will double as a bottle opener, in addition to a screwdriver, you won't have to bring a separate opener along if you bring your Tac Pen. Bottle openers can be cumbersome to carry, but as alluded to above, this device will slide right into the majority of pockets.

Negative Points

  • Battery May Have Limited Life

It's not specified that the battery within each Tac Pen is rechargeable, so each one likely has a very limited life. For that matter, even batteries that are rechargeable won't last forever. Unfortunately, a replacement battery for one of these pens may be hard to come by, and hard to insert if you do get your hands on one. As a result, you might end up having to get a whole new pen once your original battery is dead.

Critical Advice

In order to make the life of your Tac Pen's original battery as long as possible, you should only use the flashlight function when you absolutely need it. If you're using one of the other functions during the daytime or in a well-lit room, and you don't need any additional light, it's best that you leave the flashlight turned off.

Wise Advice

Do not buy Tac Pen online before searching Amazon.
- Alternatives or the same items are always available and sometimes at lower prices.

The Flash Light not Nearly as Bright as Desired

The flashlight is really poor. I have bought $1.00 flashlights that shine a lot brighter. I would never advise anyone to buy this product. No wonder you have quit making it.

Replacement Parts

My wife gave me this. It's okay and I use it while on patrol. I'm concerned about replacing the battery when it finally goes dead, but even more concerned about where I can get a replacement cartridge for the pen, which I use this tool for the most. The office supply places don't carry them and I can't find a place online to order replacements.

Piece of $&@?

I would say it’s garbage. But you can use the whistle to call dogs if needed. The rest of this $20 dollar waste of money and time is a joke. The light is NOT bright like advertised and there is a stupid nonfunctioning zoom? Also, the on /off button is terrible. It is very touchy and you can leave your light on or on strobe for hours before you notice. The advertisement is huge over the top pump up of a cheap China product that has many who cares functions like a can opener? Cheap screwdriver, a blunt end to break a window if needed. What. So can rock or stick. Why the heck is this a feature. Bell and Howell how about making a good bright low cost and sturdy FLASHLIGHT that work correctly and efficiently when needed for twenty bucks? And leave the TAC out of the Marketing lie. Cops and Military people would throw this Junk in the trash. It’s not Military grade. But thank you for the two extra pieces of &@$”. Now my Junk drawer is complete! Dog whistle and all.

Misleading

Flimsy, difficult to focus the light and keep it focused; and it doesn't even go a 100 ft.
Return postage has to be paid by a consumer.

Battery Life

Didn't realize that you can't change batteries and the flashlight part was the biggest reason I purchased it. Won't make that mistake again.

Made Where?

This "Tac Pen" is screaming made in China. Am I wrong on that point? I find when someone is screaming at me to buy something and NOWHERE is listed anywhere on the website where it is made = made in china. And I will never no way buy anything from evil china. If I am wrong do point that out.

I got sucked into this by the TV ad 3=$19.99 free shipping. Wanted to put these in my kid's backpacks for school. But the $19.99 turned into $58.94 at checkout. WTF. I canceled the order with PayPal and the point you brought up about made in Beijing Biden's home state makes even more sense. Thanks for posting.

Works as Advertised

A good practical addition to my auto glove box for emergencies.  Also for hiking or walking. Decent price.
Full transparency - I have not tried to break an auto window with it yet.

The fact of the matter is that car thieves know a lot more than you do. Even about life in general. They just don't make smart decisions with their opportunism. You didn't really expect to be taken seriously with your preachy comment, did you?
