The Smart 2-Step Disinfecting and Protecting system is a set of two spray disinfectants. Step 1 is the disinfectant itself, that cleans surfaces. Following is step 2, a shield spray that applies antimicrobial, positively charged molecules to surfaces, which have killing power against bacteria for up to 30 days. This two-step sanitizing set can be used on many surfaces in the home, such as kitchen counters, stovetops, and doorknobs. Desks, and bathroom fixtures and tiles. This product is especially relevant due to the new concern with sanitizing hard surfaces.

Total Cost Breakdown

The cost of Smart 2 Step System is $29.99 plus $11.98 shipping for a total price of $41.97.

Price is from As Seen on TV Commercial page:

  • Bacteria-Killing Strength

The Smart 2-Step system kills 99.999% of bacteria on hard surfaces. It meets the EPA's criteria for a substance that is effective in killing Sars-CoV-2. This is especially important, because Sars-CoV-2 is the virus that causes COVID-19. Without sanitizing, this virus can last for many hours, even days, on hard, non-porous surfaces.

  • Tested and Registered

This spray disinfecting system has been tested at hospitals and universities. The Step 1 Smart Touch multi-surface disinfectant is a D2, hospital-grade disinfectant. Step 2 Smart Shield spray protectant is also tested. Both are registered with the EPA.

  • Molecular-Level Protection

The Step 2 Smart Shield spray protectant for surfaces uses some interesting technology to destroy potentially offending bacterial microbes. Nanotechnology is "science, engineering, and technology conducted at the nanoscale, which is about 1 to 100 nanometers. " This includes microbial molecules and their interaction.

How It Works

The Step 1 Smart Touch spray is a disinfectant spray.

The Step 2 Smart Shield spray works because it contains positively charged molecules. Positively charged molecules at the nano level are in the spray. They covalently bond to surfaces. Covalently bonding means they actually share electron pairs with the molecules that make up the surface, and the balance of attractive and repulsive forces keep them linked. This is what maintains the Smart Shield on the surface for so long. Then, the positively charged microbes on the surface attract negatively charged microbes, and when these make contact, the negatively charged microbes are destroyed.

  • Inaccurate Advertising

Thinking critically, the As Seen on TV webpage for the product states that the Step 2 Smart Shield protectant contains “spike-like positively charged molecules". Molecules are clusters of atoms that are held together by the forces between them. This “spike-like” physical description is not representative of real molecules. It is simply an assist to create a tough image of the product as a bacteria killer. The effect could just as easily be explained by saying that the molecule “dissolves” the bacterial microbe’s cell wall. Overall, the imagery is dramatic in order to sell.

  • EPA Registration

The product is advertised as EPA, or Environmental Protection Agency, registered. This does not mean that it is approved or endorsed by the EPA. It means that the EPA agrees the product does what it claims to do, in this case, kill bacteria. Safety is also part of the EPA registration. The Smart 2-Step System does not unreasonably endanger anyone's health.

Critical Advice

A consumer who is concerned enough about disinfecting hard surfaces to buy this set is likely to spray disinfect more than every 30 days. Clean homemakers do not clean the kitchen and then wait 30 days to clean again. This makes an ineffective selling point out of the claim that the Step 2, Smart Shield protectant lasts to kill microbes and bacteria for up to 30 days, although many may not notice this. The good thing about the Smart Shield spray-on antimicrobial shield is that if someone routinely cleans a home, they may go over certain surfaces quickly and not get every nook and cranny. Thus, if Smart Shield remains in place it could be useful for protecting areas that might not get sanitized every day.

How to Use (Step by Step)

  1. Spray Step 1 Smart Touch

Spray the Step 1 Smart Touch D2 antimicrobial disinfectant on a surface, such as a kitchen counter, then wipe. It is likely that a disposable paper towel would be the best material to wipe with, as opposed to a sponge, which will remain wet for some time and can harbor or grow bacteria.

  2. Spray Step 2 Smart Shield

Next, spray the Step 2 Smart Shield formula on the surface for remaining protection. It is not clear whether a light wipe to dry the surface would be acceptable, or if you should let the Smart Shield stay on full force. Most likely this spray is intended to be sprayed on a surface and let to sit.

How It's Different from Competitors

First of all, some spray disinfectants are sold as a single bottle. Lately, however, several two-step sets have come on the market for extra protection, most likely from the coronavirus. One such two-step set also is a fungicide. This product is called RMR-141. The set is sold for the same price as the Smart 2-Step System. Most likely, consumers of the Smart 2-Step System are looking for household bacteria-killing and do not need a fungicide.

Save Money

You can get two sets of the Smart 2-Step System, four bottles in total, while paying only extra postage and handling for the second set. This would only make sense if you think you will go through each set quickly. Otherwise, the bottles might sit for years.
