How to Use (Step by Step)

  1. Fold Out Machine

    Once you have a Side Shaper in your possession, unfold it and set it up on a flat surface in your home. If you're concerned about its base damaging your flooring, place it on a yoga mat or a similar type of exercise mat instead of directly on the floor. When it's folded out correctly, the arm handles should be in the uppermost position like bike handlebars, while the two cylindrical pieces of the base should be resting parallel to each other on the floor.

  2. Adjust Settings

    Next, consult your instruction manual to find out exactly how to choose and set up an incline setting (easy, medium, or hard) and a resistance setting (also a choice between three options). If you aren't sure which settings to use, go with the easiest incline setting and the easiest resistance setting by default, and work your way up from there if you want more of a challenge.

  3. Mount Machine

    After you've set up your machine to suit your preferences, mount it with bare feet or athletic shoes on—not fashion footwear or socks, for safety's sake. Hang onto the handles with your hands, place your arms on the armrests, and place your knees between the two pieces of leg padding on each side of the machine.

  4. Start Crunching

    To get started with your crunches, begin moving your knees toward your chest and arms in a straight line. The machine will help you make this motion smooth and fluid, instead of jerky and potentially painful like it may be if you were to do it on the floor. Besides bringing up your knees in a straight line, you can also bring them up to the left or right to work your obliques on both sides. Complete five minutes of reverse crunches, or if you can't handle that many yet, as many as you comfortably can.

    When you're done your workout, dismount your machine by placing each leg on the floor (one at a time) and then either leave the machine in place or fold it up for storage.
