Paintorama is a paint-by-numbers kit that'll help you relieve stress, while also exercising your creative side at the end of a busy day. In each kit, you'll get a 12 by 16-inch artist's canvas and 18 oil paint pens in different colors. When you're finished your painting, provided that you've matched the numbers on the canvas to the numbers on the pens correctly, it'll closely resemble Vincent Van Gogh's Starry Night. There won't be much cleanup involved, as this kit doesn't require the use of runny paints or brushes.

How to Use (Step by Step)

  1. Lay Out Canvas

Before using your Paintorama kit, you'll need to lay the included artist's canvas out on a flat surface. If you work on a surface that isn't flat, the quality of your painting might suffer.

  2. Match Numbers to Colors

Next, match each individual number on your canvas to one of the 18 oil paint pens included with your kit. The numbers are printed clearly on the pens, so you'll be able to do this matching quite quickly. Every time you match a particular pen with the number printed on a certain section of the canvas, use that pen to color that section in.

  3. Let Dry (and Perhaps Frame)

After you're done coloring each of your canvas's sections, you'll notice that an image that looks like Starry Night by Vincent Van Gogh has formed. After you leave the completed painting to dry for about a day, which is customary with oil pants, you can choose to frame it or not. Keep in mind that you will have to obtain your own frame.

Features

  • For Men and Women

While only women are pictured on the official website, this painting kit is suitable for adult men and women of any age. Most teens will likely be able to use one of them without difficulty, too, as may a child with better-than-average artistic skill.

  • Two Paintings Available

If you decide to get one of these kits, you'll be able to choose between a single kit featuring Starry Night, or a double kit that'll let you recreate two paintings. The second painting in each double kit will be Claude Monet's Water Lillies, and you'll also get 18 more oil paint pens to go with the second painting.

  • Realistic Look

Even if you're not a highly skilled artist, the painting or paintings that you create with your Paintorama kit will look pretty realistic, due to the use of genuine oil paint pens. They'll look much more similar to the original Van Gogh and Monet paintings than they would if you were to use markers or colored pencils. Although the size of the canvases that come with each kit will make your paintings a bit smaller than the originals, they'll still appear to be a generous size when hanging up.

Positive Points

  • For All Levels

For most people, if you were to try to create a Van Gogh or Monet painting from scratch, you'd probably end up confused, disappointed or frustrated. Fortunately, by telling you what color to put where via the use of numbers, one of these kits will enable almost anyone to create a nice-looking replica. However, these kits are still fun and challenging enough that an experienced artist will be able to enjoy one as much as their inexperienced friends.

  • Work Alone or in Group

Many people may choose to work on their paintings alone, but there's also the option to work on one with family members or a small group of friends. It'll be best to keep the group quite small, though, since if you have more than four or five people, your work area may become too crowded for everyone.

  • Not Messy

Normally, when you paint, you'd have to clean off a bunch of dirty brushes and put away a bunch of paint containers. Fortunately, you won't have to do any of this after you use a Paintorama kit. After you make sure all the tops are back on the paint pens and that they've been stored in a safe place, you'll be done. You also won't have to clean up any paint that's been spilled on your furniture, your clothes or your skin.

  • Helps Relieve Stress

After you've had a hard day at the office, or a busy day running errands or chasing after kids, you can soothe yourself by relaxing with one of these painting kits. Once you start concentrating on adding color in the appropriate places, and see an attractive image starting to appear, your thoughts about your day will begin to melt away.

Negative Aspects

  • Not Eco-friendly

Although the use of oil paints often makes paintings look better, these paints aren't easy on the environment, since they can release volatile organic compounds into the atmosphere (even when dry). If eco-friendliness is important to you, you may be disappointed that the paint pens included in each Paintorama kit contain oil paint instead of another type.

  • Frame Not Included

It would be nice if each painting kit could contain a frame or two of the appropriate size, but unfortunately, none of them do. That means you'll have to find a frame on your own if you want to give your painting or paintings a place of honor on your wall. You'll also need to take the dimensions of each frame into account in order to make sure it'll hold your canvas nicely.

  • Can't Get Monet on Own

If you aren't a Van Gogh fan and you just want to work on the Claude Monet painting, you'll be out of luck. You'll only be able to get the Van Gogh painting on its own or both together, which seems a bit silly when the company has finished Monet canvases on hand.

Critical Advice

Oil paint pens may look like ordinary markers at first glance but they aren't exactly the same. First of all, you'll have to shake each one before you use it to allow the paint to rush to the top. Otherwise, you may find that there's not enough paint coming out on your page. On a related note, it's safe to use them on paper and other materials besides an artist's canvas, but if your material is thin, the paint may bleed through it. If you plan on using your Paintorama oil paint pens on ordinary paper after you're done with your canvas, make sure you place a generous layer of paper underneath the top one. If you don't, the furniture underneath could end up being ruined by paint stains.

Save Money

If you've got a family member or friend who's enthusiastic about art, you might want to get them a replica of a famous painting as a gift, but these cost hundreds of dollars. Another alternative, however, is creating a realistic-looking replica with a Paintorama kit—without having to dig into your savings account. If you're careful while completing your painting, it may look almost exactly like a replica when it's hanging up or is otherwise on display.
