Identitoy is a faceplate for building blocks that can be enhanced with the free tablet or smartphone app that's included with each one. Once you place your faceplate on top of your Apple or Android tablet, you'll be able to add customized backgrounds and sound effects to your plastic scenes. You'll also be able to move your building blocks around on your faceplate so that they match what's on your digital device's screen. This whole process will encourage kids to use their imaginations and modern technology at the same time.
The cost of Identitoy is $9.99 plus $4.95 shipping, for a total price of $14.94.

Once you obtain an Identitoy, you'll need to download the corresponding free app and install it on your tablet. Besides being free to download, there are no fees associated with the use of this app. It can also be downloaded to a smartphone so you can see how it works and browse your options, but a smartphone will be too small to accommodate the associated faceplate.
Next, after you use your downloaded app to pick a background scene, such as a track, a dance party or space, set your faceplate on top of your tablet. Be sure that the blocks are facing upwards and the plate is sitting completely flat, as you'll be using your tablet's screen as a building surface.
Finally, you can start building your chosen scene by moving your blocks around your faceplate so that their positions match those of the images on your tablet's screen. Depending on what scene you've chosen, you'll be able to construct things like buildings, people, and objects found in nature. As you go, you'll also be able to add sound effects to your scene by selecting them through the app (to do so, just remove the faceplate temporarily from the touchscreen).
After you're done building your first scene with Identitoy, you can either display it proudly on a table or in another prime location or immediately start building another scene. If you go with the second option, this will require you to deconstruct the first scene.
Since each faceplate is only about the size of a tablet, and the only other tool you'll need to use yours is a tablet, each set is compact enough to be portable. As a result, you'll be able to bring it along with you on vacation, to a doctor or dentist's waiting room, or anywhere else you might end up with a bored child on your hands. In contrast, some traditional building block sets have such large pieces that they'd take up as much room in a vehicle as an additional person.
Each Identitoy faceplate contains blocks in a wide variety of colors, so no child who uses it will never get bored due to using just one or two colors. If a child who doesn't have all their colors memorized uses one of these faceplates, it might also serve as a great teaching tool.
There are some applications that will only work with Android tablets and others that will only work with Apple tablets, but Identitoy will work equally well with both. Therefore, if your child gets a new tablet of a different type, they'll be able to continue playing with their faceplate and blocks in the same way. The only thing they'll need to do is download the free app to the new tablet.
When using this faceplate, the blocks that you'll use with it are more similar to Lego than traditional wooden building blocks, so your scenes will stay quite secure after they're built. To get the blocks to move and come apart without pulling on them, you'd have to shake your faceplate pretty aggressively. However, if you actually want to take the blocks apart and build a new scene, you won't have difficulty pulling them apart.
Using a toy like Identitoy will encourage any child to use their imagination, as they'll have to choose what kind of world they want to create and what sounds they want to add to it. This toy can also encourage them to follow directions in a logical manner, though, if they decide to create a scene by mimicking a background scene that appears on their app.
Considering all the background scene and sound effect options built into the app alone, users will have tons of options when it comes to creating interesting displays. On the other hand, if you were to use a set of traditional blocks, a rather boring solid-colored background scene might be the only one available. Plus, if you decide not to make an exact copy of the background scene you choose, you'll be able to arrange your blocks on your faceplate in an almost endless number of combinations.
The surface of each Identitoy faceplate isn't quite large enough to accommodate all the hands of a small group of kids, but each is big enough to allow two kids to play together. If you've got a couple of siblings who need to be entertained at the same time, and they can get along in a civil manner, having them build a scene together is an excellent option.
Unfortunately, if a child under your care wants to use this toy on a regular basis, you'll have to keep their tablet constantly charged, which will add to your electricity bill. Furthermore, if your internet plan charges you for the amount of data you've downloaded or uploaded, these charges might increase once one or more people in your household start using Identitoy.
In order to successfully use this faceplate and the associated app without help, a child will need to know how to use a tablet in the first place. This might be a skill that's simply beyond the capabilities of some children, such as those under four years of age. In those cases, an older individual will have to take the time to operate the child's app for them, or those kids will have to stick to traditional blocks.
There's a chance that the Identitoy sound effects could become annoying to parents, other adults or teenagers if they were to hear them too often in a particular location. You could attempt to remedy this by not telling your child about the sound effects the free app gives them access to, but they might eventually discover them on their own.
If you were to keep using traditional block sets, you might have to obtain dozens of sets to provide yourself with as many background scene options as you get with Identitoy. With Identitoy, you'll gain access to multiple background scenes with just one faceplate, and many of them may be more interesting than the ones you'd get with traditional block sets.
