Researchers have found that female mosquitoes are the ones that target you. They are the ones that bite. So using the oils in this bug button lets you mask the things the female mosquitoes search for. Mosquitoes are able to detect their targets by using a receptor. Said receptor picks up on detect carbon dioxide. As humans exhale, this carbon dioxide comes out.
Moreover, the mosquitos are attracted to skin odors and lactic acid that humans and other mammals give off. Aroma from certain oils like those included in this product help to mask these odors thereby reducing the chances of mosquitos finding their targets. Please note that this does not mean that using it will prevent you from getting bitten. You can still get a bite if a mosquito lands on you. Landing on you is possible by accident if you are just in their path of travel. Masking your odor must makes it harder for them to seek you out and find you.

Insect repellents vary. You can find so many different types. However, they can be classified into chemical and naturally repellents. Chemical repellents are the ones most effective at preventing mosquitos from finding you but they also have large amounts of DEET in them. DEET has been shown in some scientific studies to cause issues like nausea, dizziness, headaches, or rashes. Children under the age of eight are at a higher risk for toxicity after lots of exposure to DEET. It is recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics that you avoid using DEET on children. Of course, using a product with DEET in it is not as drastic, but still you should exercise caution.
Oils which are distilled from plants have been naturally used as alternative insect repellents for years without negative effects. One of the most commonly used is citronella which prevents insects and mosquitos from targeting you. Such natural oils are safe for use on children and pets. Alternative oils include Geranium Oil, Lemongrass Oil, Cedar Oil, Neem Oil, Eucalyptus Oil, Catnip Oil, Sunflower Oil, and Soybean Oil.
There are many ways in which you can reduce mosquitos in your nearby area. You can start by emptying standing water. Doing this will help keep away mosquitos because it removes the breeding grounds where they are often. Remove water from cans, gutters, flower pots, pet water dishes, buckets, tires, and even bird baths.
If you have a swimming pool be sure to maintain it regularly as this will prevent mosquito breeding.
If you have rain gutters, try and clear them out so that they drain properly. Whenever rain gutters get clogged, they will easily become a breeding ground for the mosquitos and you likely won’t be able to see it.
If you have weeds near your home or yard, or a large lawn, be sure to cut them down. Mow your lawn regularly and cut down large weeds near your home.
You want to ensure your door screens and any screens on your windows are in good condition. Doing this means you can prevent mosquitos from getting into your home this way. If you do not have any screens on your door or windows, you might consider investing in some temporary ones. You can purchase screen kits which enable you to cut out a screen to fit your windows or doors with ease.
Make sure you irrigate any garden space or lawn carefully and avoid overwatering. With proper irrigation you can prevent the issue of standing water sitting for days at a time.

I was heading to India and my naturopath told me to get something other than DEET product as it needs to be removed every 8 hours with hot soapy water which would be impossible for me given type of traveling. I began to look and found the Bug Buttons Mozzies were in squadrons in India. I wore the buttons for prescribed 72 hours (placed a button on my pillow at night as we had no mozzie drape) and while they hovered none ever landed. I would HIGHLY recommend them. Funny part is Indians regularly asked me what club I belonged to (when they would see my yellow button on my top).
