Copper Chef Crisper

95 Votes

The copper crisper is a nonstick mesh basket which is designed to sit on top of a nonstick cookie sheet so that you can air fried foods without having to use unhealthy grease or oil. With it you can theoretically air fry foods, which alleviates the unhealthy aspect of most fried cooking. The two components used to make the Copper Chef Crisper come apart so you can use the cooking sheet on its own if need be.

Total Cost Breakdown

The cost of Copper Chef Crisper is $19.99 plus $7.99 shipping. The special TV offer allows a free gift which you will receive by paying the extra shipping fee of $7.99 for a total price of $35.97. Price is from As Seen on TV Commercial page: copperchefcrisper.com

Pros

  • Easy to Hold

The easy grip handles make it much easier to hold and much safer to hold.

  • Endorsed

Eric Theiss is the endorsement figurehead for the copper crisper and for all of the other bake ware associated with that brand. He is a celebrity chef who started cooking at the age of six and opened his own restaurant in Pennsylvania at a very young age. Additionally, he is currently a spokesperson for many cookware lines and he has published multiple books about cooking. He still runs his own restaurant and received many awards for his cooking.

Cons

  • Fluctuating Taste

Most ovens do not let you achieve the air circulation and heating necessary to truly give a fried food taste to food without butter or oil. As such, the design of the copper crisper will not give you the same results as an air fryer or legitimately deep frying your food.

  • Not Necessarily Healthier

The idea behind the copper crisper being a healthy alternative to other cooking is that you don't have to use any grease or oil when you cook. This is great if you are starting from scratch and are avoiding any unhealthy additives. However, if you are using pre-fried foods they are probably full of unhealthy oils and preservatives already so you really aren't getting any benefit from alleviating your personal addition of cooking oils.

How It Works

An air fryer works by having a bottom cup or any type of bottom tray that holds your food. Above this trait is a heating element which creates hot air. The hot air is circulated by fan over every part of the food so that you can quickly brown the exterior of the food and simultaneously seal the moisture inside the food.

Naturally this means that you are not frying your food. Air in the name is misleading because the technology doesn't actually use anything to fry the food. Actually frying food requires a food to be submerged in boiling oil. For the whole process of air cooking just kind of heat your food and helps you to reheat frozen foods that were already fried like French fries.

This is a very important distinction because the copper crisper functions significantly better than alternative options. If you keep in mind the fact that alternative options use air to simply reheat already fried food, the copper crisper is very special. Reason being, the bottom cup where the food is held is large compared to the size of the full oven whereas normal air fryers are smaller. So this means that if you can get your oven hot enough and move the air around fast enough the copper crisper will let you achieve the same taste of fried food. However, without using butter or oil. As such, the difficulty is that most ovens don't provide features which let you achieve the optimum level of heating and air circulation.

How it's Different from Competitors

The copper crisper has two parts. First is an elevated crisping tray which is made from nonstick mesh. Said tray lets you circulate heat when the food is inside of your oven. This cooks your food on all sides of the same time without requiring you to turn the food or burn it on accident. Traces on top of the second part which is the ceramic nonstick cookie sheet. This nonstick cookie sheet is meant to catch any grease for crumbs or anything that drips from the mesh basket. Having the cookie she doesn't help to cook anything any better but it does keep your oven clean. This non-bulky appliance can be used in your normal oven and then stored the same way you store regular pots and pans.

Alternatives

  • Air Fryers

Air fryers are not cheap. They take up a great deal of space on your counter and they are designed to use natural hot air to fry your food in a healthier fashion. With the copper crisper you can transform your oven into the same type of air fryer which saves you time and money and helps you to know longer consume unhealthy oils or butter. You can make things like chicken strips, roasted vegetables, or even onion rings.

Save Money

Theoretically you can save money by purchasing this one unit and getting the additional baking pan. The two units are separate so you can use the nonstick baking pan for all of your baking needs. This kind of gives you to pieces of bake ware in one. If you do not already have a nonstick ceramic baking pan then you save money that you would've otherwise spent purchasing another pan. Of course be advised that it has the name copper in it but it is not made of copper. There is some copper coding but the unit itself is not an authentic, 100% copper pan. A lot of people are misled by the copper crisper name and bake ware product line because they believe all of the items are completely copper. Bear in mind that a completely copper bacon would be significantly more expensive and durable.

Save Time

When you use this particular design you save a lot of time because both pieces are dishwasher safe. That means that you can simply place both pieces in the dishwasher when you're done using them and you don't have to wash them by hand. Additionally, it saves time cleaning your oven itself because of the cookie tray that catches all of the drippings that would otherwise bake on to the bottom of your oven.

Issues

  • What Makes it Nonstick

The company says that the cookie sheet is coated in ceramic but they don't tell you how the mesh crisping tray is nonstick. As such, one has to wonder. This is problematic because the only other nonstick cookware material you can use is Teflon which contains different plastics that come with several health concerns. It is very likely that this is the material used otherwise the company would clearly state that both the mesh cooking tray and the cookie sheet are coated in ceramic.

I Regret Buying it!

No Recipes or Cook Times

I returned an air fryer and bought a copper crisper. I would like to use it today and there are no recipes or especially cook times. How are you supposed to know how long to bake your food and what oven temp? I have been on line searching for some info on this subject and can't find anything. Really frustrating and disappointing.

I Recommend Buying it!

Copper Crisper worked fine. Tray is non-stick. Tried chicken drumsticks 2 ways. Did 4 coated with olive oil and seasoning and, 4 coated with egg and breadcrumbs. Both batches browned, no turning required. Started browning at 450○ for 30-40 minutes. Then I reduced temp. To 350° for 15 min. Crisper works best if food is room temp. Prior to placing in oven.

No Recipe Book ;-(

I do not understand at all why there is not a recipe book either. There should be at least a few to get a buyer started.

No Recipes for Copper Crisper

I am very disappointed in the fact that no recipes came with my pan. What temperature is too hot and how long to bake. Also, what foods are the best. Can I use fresh potatoes to make fries, or must I use frozen frenchfries?
The TV ads make it look easy, but no information on prep!

I have something to say!

Instructions as to what temperature settings to be used with different foods. Also where to position in oven for best results. What foods work best as frozen fries or frozen breaded fish, etc.
